Travel Insurance and Pregnancy

There are two types of travel insurance that you should consider if you are traveling pregnant.  The first is trip cancellation insurance.  This is the type to get if you are not worried about health concerns at your destination.  For example, if you are flying domestic, or if you already have world-wide health coverage.  Normal trip cancellation insurance will reimburse you for the cost of the trip should you need to cancel the trip.  But this won’t cover cancellations for any reason.

In this case, pregnancy is often considered a preexisting condition, and will not be covered.  For trip cancellation insurance, the simple solution is to buy “cancel for any reason” insurance.  This is exactly what the name says.  No matter what the reason you cancel, you can get reimbursed.  The only drawback here is that it will be more expensive than the usual trip cancellation insurance.  But if you are worried about having to cancel due to complications of pregnancy, then this is definitely the option to go with.

The other option is travel health insurance. If you are traveling out of the country, then this is the type of insurance you will need.  It covers you for any injury or illness, and usually includes medical extradition.  This means that if you are injured or become ill in an area where there is not quality health care available, then you can be brought back to your home country for medical care.

Normal pregnancy, childbirth, or pregnancy-related complications can be difficult to get covered under normal travel insurance.  Some special plans offer coverage specifically tailored to pregnant women, allowing you to travel with travel insurance coverage up to your expected due date.  Some of these policies will even allow you to put your child on the plan after he or she is born.

However, these plans are generally only available to UK residents and other European travelers.  If you are from the USA, you may find it difficult finding travel insurance pregnancy coverage.  In this case, consider calling insurance companies directly.  If you still can’t find anything suitable, then you should at least get normal travel coverage.   At least you will be covered for any injury or illness.  Normal coverage may also cover life-threatening pregnancy complications, so check with your insurance provider for the details.

It is vital to Compare Travel Insurance plans before purchase

If you are an avid traveller then you must be aware of the various travel insurance plans that the insurance companies provide. If you are not a regular traveller then some insurance companies provide an insurance plan for travellers who do not travel often and these plans cover only the single trip and the customer might purchase these along with the ticket for his/her travel.

Under any circumstances, if one intends to purchase travel insurance plans, then just like it is with the purchase of any insurance plan, it is vital that one researches on all the travel insurance plans available and then once all the information is available, sit down and compare travel insurance plans. This helps you eliminate the unnecessary players who claim to offer the most economical insurance plans while actually not offering certain important feature that a competitor might.

When one sits down to compare travel insurance plans with the information about the factors that affect it and what all would a prospective buyer want-is actually when you are able to see through the various plans that there are. More often than not, the insurance companies which proclaim to offer the most economical amongst all insurance plans actually do not offer some important features that are included in plans from some other company with the insurance premium only a little higher for the additional service. For example, a normal travel insurance plan might provide insurance against death and injury during travel, provide medical cover in case of hospitalization, coverage for baggage in case lost and stolen and at times even the personal items that the customers might want to get insured. Then for the same plan, there are companies which offer a discount if both spouses are enrolled in the plan or a whole family purchases the plan.

To be able to ascertain such nuances is why it becomes vital to compare travel insurance.
